Noncombatants in 3rd Mississippi

Been doing a little muster roll research on Company G, Gainesville Volunteers, of the 3rd Regiment Mississippi Infantry.  Made a surprising discovery:  Five of the men listed on the roster were labeled as cooks (slaves).  We find Edmond, Frederick, Horrace, Samuel, and Wash on the list.  It is amazing how many questions this discovery raises.  Since Mississippi granted pensions to Confederate veterans, widows, and black noncombatants beginning in 1888 a research trip to MDAH seems to be in order.  Will keep readers posted.
